Wardell's Alien Labor Bill De-- feated on a Division--Measures in the Legislatare. 'A good deal: of progress was made with the business before the Legislature yesterday, and the probability of a con-- clusion by Easter became more evi-- dent. During the discussion of his bill to amend the assessment act, which is designed to repeal the "scrap--iron" as-- sessment, the Premier announced that on receipt of a full and complete report, embodying recommendations from the Assessment Commissioner next session, the Legislature would reconsider the, whole question of assessment in all its bearings. In the afternoon Mr. Wa,.r-} dell pressed for a second reading of his| bill respecting the employment of--alien labor in Ontario, and on a division it was defeated by 39 to 30. | _ Bills Intrqducgd_. s sBE §a) The following bills were introduced ; | The Premier--Respecting toll roads.| This simplifies the machinery for muni-- cipalities desirous of expropriating toll roads. Mr. Foy--To amend the statute--laws by providing that cases now pending or entered during the present session shall not be affeeted. by said laws unless spe-- cifically mentioned. Mr. Hill--To amend the street railway act by repealing the street car féender clause of last session. In place of ths it is proposed to substitute a section providing that comparies may use fen-- ders selected by themselves, subject to the approval of the Public Works En-- gineer, who shall have due regard to: the location of the lines, the speed--at which the cars are allowed to run and| the safety of the public. ~~
