The 1ontpartandintr motion by Mr. Carscallen that a tax be imposed on nickel and copper ores. to be remitted, when refined in Canada, was debated in the Legislature yesterday. The motion did not tind favor with Mr. Caracallen's party friends. who united on an am- ondment in which they deprecated so- called government by order in Coun- cil. This amendment was defeated by .84 to 19. the largest madority of the session against the Opposition. Hon. Mr. Davis moved an amendment to the main motion, expressing the view that it would be premature to impose the tax at present, and this was car- ried by a vote of 81 to 21. During the attemoon the good roads Bill passed committee with a very brief discus- Mon. , The University Bill. A number of deputations saw Hon. Mr. Harcourt with reference to the uni. versity bill in the afternoon.
