'The amendment, now a clause of the bill, is as follows :--The rights con-- ferred by the first section of this act ghall cease at the same time as the rights of the Toronto Railway Com-- pany under the statute and agreement now in force regarding the same. The City of Toronto shall have the power by by--law to grant a further exten-- slon of the rights hereby given for & further period of twenty years on such terms as may be agreed upon between the city and the company. This was further amended on mo-- tion of Mr. Marter by providing that such by--law must be ratified by a ma-- jorux of ratepayers qualified to vote for Aldermen and Mayor, Mr. N. W. Rowell, on behalf of the |\ Yonge Street Protective Association, ' which consists of property owners on \ Yonge street north, was heard by the committee when other clauses of the bill were about to be taken up. He contended that the bill should make provision for compensation for dam-- age done to property. Great care should also be taken as to the powers given for connection with other rail-- ways. The rights in this respect, under the bill, were too wide. Messrs. R. L. Fraser and J. G. Sceott argued along the same lines on behalf of other prop-- erty _ owners. Mr. H. S. -- Osler, on behalf of the township of North Toronto, wanted a clause in-- gerted providing that no freight car or truck which the company is not en-- titled to haul over the streets of To-- ronto should be allowed in any other municipalities through which the line passes. Mr. C. C. Robinson, for the York County Council, thought such action would be over-ridlnfi all that the Legislature had done in regard to the Metropolitan. The Town of North To-- ronto had always blocked legislation asked for by the Metropolitan and agreed to by the county, and had no , confidence in the county. Mr. Hill, M.P.P., sharply criti-- cized Mr. Robinson, The latter, he said, was a paid offictal of the county, but had been hand--in--glove wit® the Metropolitan for the last thirteen years. The County Council had given away the rights of North Toronto and other municipalities, and that was why they had lost confidence in the county. The committee adjourned, to meet again this morning. ]
