HANNA. . * wommrnaivemenmunmmmmmmenmesmmmmmee 'No Limit to the Number of Bartenders' ' Licenses--Status of Clubs Not to be Changed--Graded Fee Suggested by the Deputation For Hotels. . | A deputation from the Toronto Hotel-- keepers' Association waited on Hon. _{ Mr. Hanna yesterday and expressed their _ views on _ several _ sections 'of the . new -- license bill, 'Their !urgauizalion represents _ the _ larger | hotels of the city, 'They held that ilhe license fee should be a graded one, | the smaller hotels paying a heavier fee than the larger. 'This view was «base»Al. on the ground that the larger hotels at-- tord more and better accommodation for the public than the smaller ones, There |does not seem to 'be any intention on ,thc part of the Government to make & | change in the bill in this regard. The deputation was informed by Hon. Mr, | Hanna that there was no thought of a |limit to the licensing of bartenders so long as parties making application com-- | plied with the law in this regard. -- | The deputation thought a limit on the \number would tend toward the formation _of a bartenders' union. The drinking of liquor in hotels on Sundays was also talked of. The strict enforcement of the , law in this respect was held by the dep-- | utation to contribute more to drunken--| |ness. than would be the case if liquor! 'could be sold to guests at meals or dur-- | i ing specified hours. Guests, knowing the | \law, often smuggied liquor into their j | rooms on Saturdays for use on Sundays ; 'and consumed more in this way than if | the law were less strict. On |this point _ no _ promise -- was gi\'-' | en that there could be _ any ' | change in the law. _ Other matters of | |less importance were also discussed. | 'The deputation was headed by Mfr. \Thomas M. Bayne. president of the as-- | sociation. | _ Another deputation asked the Provin-- !f'ial Secretary if it was intended to put 'clubs under the operation of the license law the same as hotels, particularly as |to inspection. This. they thought. would serve no good purpose. but would tend |to destroy the social and home--like spirit | f the clubs. _ The deputation departed with the feeling that the clubs were not to come under the act in the ordinary sense of the phrase. Messrs. E. B. Os-- ler, M.P., Walter Barwick, K.C.., and | A. R. Boswell, K.C., constituted the deputation. I «emnunmenmmmmmmmmmmmmemmmem se ----
