" submit, Mr. Speaker, it is a matter of great historic interest, and we would do well to recognize it on the floor of this Legislature. I would therefore suggest, with the ap- proval ot the Prime Minister, that we ' should recognize this important his- toric event by putting some minute on the Journals of this Home. and that, further, either his Honor the Lieu- tenant-Governor or you, as Speaker of the House, be asked to converter Col. Mercer, Commandant of the On- tario Brigade, the congratulations of this Assembly for the manner in which the Ontario Brigade acquitted itself in its first engagement." Extend Sympathy to Bereaved. Mr. Rowen concluded by saying that the sympathies of all would go out to those who were wounded, and it there were any fatalities. The Premier said: "It gives me great pleasure, sir, to move that we extend to the Colonel in charge of the Ontario Brigade our appreciation of their gallant action under fire and our general apprecia- tion of what they are dmg for us in the present great struggle. I am sure that they have acted as every honor- able member of this House expected they would. I.have never had any doubt in my mind that the men. from Canada would prove themselves worthy of the best traditions of the British Empire, worthy of what Brit- ish soldiers have. .stood for in days gone by. worthy of/this blessed'land 'of the Maple Leaf which gave them birth.
