Notwith-- standing any existing laws of the Province, the bill proposes that de--} grees in universities, schools and} seminaries shall be awarded with-- out reference to the standing of any candidate in the study of Ger-- man, and that it shall be unlawful to place upon the curriculum any book or publication in the German language, or to require that thei |German language shall be learned | f'us part of a course of study for any | examination. The bill also proposes tthut no person shall make any pub--| ' lic address, preach or conduct divine | service or speak at any municipal or Council meeting in the German 'l:umuago. and that no books, rec-- ords or correspondence of any com--| [ pany or municipality shall be writ--| | ten or printed in that language. No | teacher would be allowed to use the | Germanvlanguage in addressing pu-- lpi?s, and no public notice or peti-- | tion woruld be allowed printed in the | German language if the bill carried. ! _ The penalty proposed to be impos-- jed upon thos® violating the act is not less than $100 and not more than-- $1,000,., which would be re-- covered hy the action of any person who would sue for the amount through any County or District | Court. Every action for the re-- covery of such penalty would be tried by a Judge without a jury. The Lieutenant--Governor in Coun-- cil woulid have power to cancel any | Provincial patents issued to any firm if it violated the act. Lutheran Churches Affectod. Lutheran German Bapntist and a number of Roman Catholic churches in Woestern Ontario | will be the most affected if the Legislature adopts the bill in-- troduced to make it an offence to teach or use the German language lin Ontario. In Toronto only stu-- |dents of the University and colleges | would be affected. However, in f | Waterloo, Eruce and Huron coun-- [ties there are a number of churches in which divine service is conducted each Sunday in German. A couple of weekly newspapers, published in Kitchener, would be either forced out of business or else compelled to print in English. The same is true of churches through-- out the northern part of Waterloo county. Certain sections in Perth county wouilid be affected, while fair-- ly lar"ge settlements of people using the German language in Huron and Bruce counties would be compelled to change from German to English in th'eu' chug'ch services and at some public meetings.
