About 4 o'clock the alarm gongs got into play through-- out the corridors of the build-- ing, and a few minutes later seven reels, motor and horse-- driven, rushed up to the east entrance, where a crowd of . curious ofice workers was awaiting their arrival. The alarm indicated the trouble to be in the attic of the northeast corner of the building. No fire could be dis-- covered there, however, and, after a thorough search, Dep-- uty Chief Duncan MacLean ordered the firefighters to de-- part. As gearch for the playful de-- tector was continued by em-- plovees of the building, discus-- slon -- continued as to what could have been the cause of its untoward conduct--only a few hours after it had been thoroughly overhauled, tested and put into operation. There were numbers of people who smelled "something burning' until they were informed that the alarm was false.
