The designation of "built .up areas" will be left to the Highways Department. Although thirty miles per hour is the limit set for them under the proposed law, the munici- pal councils dmcerned may pass by- laws regulating the speed within their parka to fifteen miles per. The committee's action was by way of a compromise on legislation from Major James Clark (Lib., Windsor-Sandwich) which advocat- ed the abolition of the present limit altogether. An attempt to defeat the Clark measure was rejected by 16 to 12. The compromise legisla- tion carried on a vote of 14-11. Approval was given by Munici- pal Committee of the Legislature yesterday to a bill increasing the motoring speed limit in this Prov- ince from 35 to 50 miles an hour on the open highway. A limit of thirty miles per hour is to apply in cities, towns and built-up areas. McQUESTEN O P P C) S E D 50 Miles Per Hour Approved by Committee of Legislature SPEED Ijl/ff Ti) BE RAISED
