MARCH @2 . Pay Scale Differences # # Cited by Liberal M.L.A. HEENAN DISAGREES Hon,. Peter Heenan, Minister of Lands and Forests and -- one--time Fedcral Minister of Labor, yester-- day split in conviction with Join J. Glass (Lib., Toronto St. Andrew) when the latter in the Throns * Speech debate advocated the cen-- tralization of Labor Department's work at QOttawa ' Mr. Glass argued, on belyall of the abolition of Provincial Labor De-- partments, although he stressed that the Ontario department under Hon N. O. Hipel had been doing "good work," that centralized administra-- tion was necessary to eliminate in-- ' equalities in wage standards "Manufacturers of uniforms in To-- ronto have been unable to renew their contracts because of the lowe: wage scales in another Province," said Mr. Glass. "I am firmly of the ' opinion that the only solution of ' labor problems in the Provinces is to bring administration under the ' Dominion control entirely." Mr. Heenan asserted: "Labor men of Ontario have the best hours anga best wages of any Province in Can-- ada. and I for one am not going to lightly turn that over to any Gov-- & ernment." * Mr. Glass, a veteran of World War 1. declared a larzge number of people were not conscious of the gravity of the issues involved in | the present war. He charged, too, that of his own personal knowledge 'there were in Toronto men "of the most Fascist reactionary wows, who, if it were not for the fact that we |are at war with Hitler, are stil} ready to embrace these doctrines." _ To clear the pathway for a total war effort, he declared, these and ;communisliv influences "who are |still doing their nefarious work in * | underground -- channels, must . be . eradicated." i
