Update on the Miller Family Nature Reserve Hastings Prince Edward Land Trust (HPELT) is very excited at the response to our campaign to raise funds for the Stewardship Fund for the Miller Family Nature Reserve. We have received amazing support from the citizens of Prince Edward County and sur- rounding areas. I am delighted to report that we are well on our way and we are highly confident that we will achieve the $85,000 goal by the mid-January deadline. Thank you to everyone !! Patti Wolfe Board of Directors, HPELT Thadn't received my copy of The Mirror, before several people asked me if the OPP would target a busi- ness by enforcing R.LD.E. in front of an establishment that serves alcohol. I asked them to what they were re- ferring, they answered a letter in The Mirror. The letter dealt with a R.LD.E. program that ran on a cold wet November night in Milford. I then read the published letter in The Mirror and realized where people's con- cerns were coming from. The men and women of our police service do take into account the history in areas of our community. For example, if you have an area where break and en- ters are occurring, they would concentrate patrols in that area to combat that activity. If you have a liquor establishment where drunken fights are occurring, yes they will be there to address the issue. The Milford Bistro, to my understanding, has no such history, but our community - yes, South Marysburgh - isn't exempt from the tragic loss which so often follows impaired driving. After all, we are the home of the ‘horn trip.” Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere, or R.LD.E., is a keystone program in keeping our high- ways safe. I congratulate the officers who were in Mil- ford and I hope they can make appearances in our com- munity a regular event. I, perhaps more than most, know the pressures and time restraints the officers work under, and I for one am glad to see they are making that effort to show their colours in our community. To the author of the letter, Judy Lamb, I con- gratulate her in acknowledging that she supports R.ID.E. programs, it is a shame that negative words about the police’s motivation were based on an as- sumption.
