Didn’t your heart just leap at the sound of red-winged blackbirds and peepers? To catch a glimpse of a butterfly, like the mourning cloak, might even cause you to imagine that sum- mer could happen one day. So, “Grow Your Own” is back, to bring a little extra and inspiration to the vegeta- ble grower in you. Selfishly, we want to see lots of your glowing, bright, beautiful and delicious pro- duce entered into the Milford Fair in September. Also, it somehow feels, when growing vege- tables, that everything you do connects you back to the long line of county farmers and farmers’ wives who have dug, weeded and tended their plots to feed and raise families here. They say that spring comes early to farmers and vegetable gardeners, combing through seed catalogues and eagerly awaiting the moment when the soil is warm enough; or, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, waiting for the moon to be just right. With the Full Flower moon or Corn Planting moon on its way in May, you might want to experi- ment with an old-time farmer practice for a larger, tastier harvest: above ground crops should be plant- ed during the light, or waning of the moon and be- low ground crops during the dark, or waxing of the moon. Happy plotting and planting! Noite bares Since 1925 3073 County Rd. 10, PO Box 100, Milford, Ont.
