The South Marysburgh Mirror 3 To all our Friends, Neighbours and Acquaintances in South Marysburgh By Pieter de Boer In the winter of 1989, with the snow piled high, Harriet and I drove to The County to find a place to rent for the following summer. While staying with friends in Prinyer's Cove we received a call about a property for sale in Milford. By seeing the outline of the shore through the snow, we realized the poten(cid:415)al this li(cid:425)le peninsula on the Mill Pond would have. An offer to purchase was accepted and we have never looked back. A(cid:332)er weekending from Toronto for the next six years we were able to move full (cid:415)me to Milford in 1996. We embraced life in the village to the fullest. My earliest community project was building the flower boxes on the bridge. I also took over the bird feeder building project from Bob White and have immensely enjoyed con(cid:415)nuing this for the last fi(cid:332)een years or so. The challenge each year was to come up with a different feeder while at the same (cid:415)me be of a design the children could assemble using a power drill. In the mean(cid:415)me Harriet has not stood s(cid:415)ll and was one of the members of the Milford Bloomers. The ini(cid:415)ators of a village beau(cid:415)fica(cid:415)on Bloomers were project whereby barrels planted with flowers were delivered by tractors around the village. As well, they organized the first Easter parade, commissioned The Miller statue at the post office, par(cid:415)cipated in the fair board parades, as well as being involved in numerous other community ac(cid:415)vi(cid:415)es. Harriet also enjoyed all the years of pumpkin pain(cid:415)ng with the children at the local fair. We have always been project oriented and there has been no shortage of project opportuni(cid:415)es, especially when a new house was built in 2002 on the original foot print of the old one. When looking back we are happy with all we have accomplished and are s(cid:415)ll amazed how we could have made it all possible, most of it with our bare hands. During the last few years it has become increasingly challenging to maintain our gardens to the standards we insist on. Due to health issues, Harriet, for whom gardening has been her life passion, finds serious gardening ac(cid:415)vity to be very limited. My energy level also is not close to what it was only a few years ago. We realized that at some point in the not too distant future we needed to seriously downsize and have been looking for some (cid:415)me for a smaller place in Picton. However, none of the homes we looked at remotely appealed to us as we feel spoiled in the home we have now. A few month ago, we learned of a new bungalow townhouse development within a ten minute walk of Main Street Picton. Immediately we fell in love with the model home and we decided to make a condi(cid:415)onal offer the same day. This being a townhouse in the city means that we are downsizing in respect to the garden to the extreme but we already have planned for it to become a beau(cid:415)ful li(cid:425)le courtyard garden. We have been agonizing and soul searching about this but think that for the long term this is the best solu(cid:415)on while we are s(cid:415)ll able to make this change. In addi(cid:415)on, we will be able to have cats again! We will miss the many good friends and neighbours as well as the community spirit, however, Picton is not too far away and once we have se(cid:425)led in our welcome mat will be out again.
