[18 |, The South Marysburgh Mirror] Life in the Past Excerpts from Nelson Hicks’ journal at Hix Holme, South Bay February, 1898 Feb. 1 Drifted most all day. I went out to Miller Hick's. Michal and I were intending on having a oyster supper around to Annie Mauds but the night being cold and rough we post-pone it till some future date. Feb. 2 Maw and Paw went up to Mrs. Norman Ostranders to attend a wedding. Miss Cassie Ostrander and Mr. Hazelton Ackerman were united in the Holy bonds of Matrimony. Feb.3 It has been very rough all this aftemoon. We have a new Milks cow a nice heffer calf. Paw says he is going to rais it. Feb.4 I havent been doying any thing much to day. Mr. Johnson Parkinson Funeral Serman was preached at the Bay church @ half past two oclock and then he was buried at the Head of the Bay. Mr. Parkinson died on Wednesday morning Feb.3. Feb.5 Set a couple of shoes on Blaise. It snowed and drifted all day broke the roads out towards night. Feb.7 Jake and lib come here stayed all night. I went down to the Union to pray meeting. There is going to be meeting every night. Feb.8 Jake and Lib went down to Dans at night. Myrtle Spafford and I went to an oyster supper at Oreean Dulmage. Feb.9 I slept till noon. In the after noon Mikle Hicks and I went around to Nelson Ostrander. The old sow have birth to 10 pigs. Sun.13 Jake and Lib started for home this moming. Some are driving buggies. This has been a lovely day. I went out to Miller Hick's. Af- ter dinner I went down to Corkers. Feb.15 I went over to Picton after some oysters for a party that we are going to have at Mr. Leroy Spafford's to night. It was a very rough night and cold. Had a good time. Broke a bed playing. Felt very sorry. We.16 We have had a very sudden change again. Cold weather with some snow hope we get some more snow. Sat.19 I went up and got Blaise shod to George Lowry's. The roads are some better. Mr. Lighthall and Wife came here. Sun. 20 I went down to Dan's till after dinner. Then I went down to Capt. Spafford visting. Mon.21 Snowed and drifted all day Mr. Lighthall is very uneasy. He wants to get home. Tu.22 Still it is snowing. Mr. Lighthall very anxious to start for home. About ten oclock Paw and Maw started home with Mr. Lighthall's. Pa and Ma are going to Kingston. We.23 Arthur Farrington come out here and stayed all night. Th 24 Snowed some. Dan was up here. Fri. 25 Archie come home from Jakes and other places where he has been visting. Sat. 26 I was down to the Life Boat Station - to the speches. Arthur Farrington come up with me. Mon.28 We are having lovely weather and the snow is wasting away very fast. But still we have good sleighing yet. Tomarrow is election and I suppose there will be a big time among the People.
