If nothing of interest is happening, you will know by its not being written about. Opinions expressed are those of the editor, unless otherwise stated. What are we going to see in '93? 1992 is not likely to go down in history as one of the greatest years of the twentieth century. There have always been those who predicted gloom, saw disaster in every cloud, suspected dishonesty and self-serving in every leader and public person. These people were discredited by the majority, as being just so many scare mongers -- people who had never seen good in anyone, so weren't to be taken seriously. So how come we are taking them seriously now? How come we are seeing only the negative side, putting a pessimistic spin on everything that hap- pens' tulips, they won't bloom. If we continue to let our discon- tent shape our actions, we will just harvest greater crops of discontent, until we are as lost to reason as those countries we see destroying themselves on the TV news each eve- ning. The veneer of civilization that directs our lives is as easily destroyed by constant negative thought and action as the ozone layer is by CFCs. We need that mantie of hope to protect us from the burning rays of cynicism and mistrust, that are destroying or threatening to destroy so much of what is good around us. Hope gives rise to enthusiasm, So we've had a lot of dull weather -- we need it to put nature into dor- mancy for the cold of winter. So we've had a lot of rain -- we need it to raise the water table that everyone complains is so low. So there is 11% unemployment and higher in Canada -- that means that 8.9 people out of every 10 are work- ing, and at a time of recession. There are those alive who can remember the Great Depression, who would have felt those figures to be the best of times. Yes there is child abuse and wife abuse and a whole host of abuse, but w= are admitting that it ex something about it -- enough -- but something is ii. which in turn generates creativity. in the words of the philosopher Ar- nold Toynbee, "To give afairchance to potential creativity Is a matter of life and death for any society. -- The outstanding creative ability of a fair- ly small proportion of the popula- tion is mankind's ultimate capital asset." So gear up your hope, get some enthusiasm and lets create a better world to take into the new ing. There are more people :. fed by our food banks -- but the food banks are there to feed them and we are «roving 2nd giving as individuals, not just demanding imperscr = so tons from government. This may not sound like much of a Christmas mes: "i for Christmas to the Christian is a time of hope. It is time to celebrate the birth of Christ, who was the hope ©; the world, so they at least should be rejoicing and full of anticipation. Itis, to most of us in our country and certainly in this community, a time for giving and sharing, of kindness and love. This too should bring hope. As for 1983, so close upon us, to paraphrase Charles Dickens, it could be the best of times -- it could be the worst of times, but what ever it is , we will have had a hand in making it what it becomes. We can either continue to sit around and, as my son used to say, "moan and drip", or we can re-evaluate our priorities, enjoy what we have been so richly blessed with and remember that if you don't plant year. Merry Christmas and a Very Happy and Creative New Year to everyone!
