On their own, as a separate country, Quebec would have to harmonize with its trading partners in language and culture just as the rest of Canada is presently doing. No concessions will be made for their Franco-phone sensibilities and sense of uniqueness. They will be too small a country to defend against the encroachment of the American culture around it. A child who runs away from home eschews the right to parental protection, economic support and the property of the parent. Why should Quebec be any different than an errant child? Why should it expect any more support than that child? Well it should make for an interesting fall. Should the yes side win in the Quebec referendum, and it is hoped it will, will such referenda become a way of life for the next hundred years to be taken ever less seriously. Who knows. Maybe in the spring, the rest of Canada should hold a referendum to decide whether to keep Quebec and see what loyalties arise as a consequence.
