I I A LIBRARY NOTES Five months into amalgamation and everybody still has a lot of questions. Will this happen? Why isn't that happening? What just happened? While the Ann Farwell Library is in the information business. we don't pretend to know everything that is going on. However, if we stick to basics, (who what when where how), maybe we can clear up the questions we have been hearing from you the most. Who is that behind the desk? Please welcome Jenny Keith as our new Library Assistant. Jenny brings a lot of experience as well as enthusiasm to the job and we are fortunate to have her working in the library. When she isn't slinging books in Milford, Jenny can be found hard at work in her orchard in Athol. What is new with the Friends of the Library? Friends of the Ann Farwell Library will be meeting at the Ann Farwell Library on Thursday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss, among other things, their upcoming summer raffle. The Milford Friendship Circle has donated a beautiful Ribbons and Roses quilt to the Friends of the Ann Farwell Library for the summer raffle. When, Where and How? Amidst all the changes and turmoil brought on by amalgamation, many people have wondered how our local library will fare as part of the new County-wide library system. While that remains to be seen, now that some of the dust is settling, we can see how the new library system is developing. An effort is being made to centralize many of the functions of the new library system. For instance, the Milford Library goes through Picton to get interlibrary loans, the bookkeeping is done at Picton Library. and the first system-wide pool of large print books originated in Picton. It is quite likely that in time, other services will be centralized, such as programming and some book buying. All the local libraries are managed by Branch Librarians who are responsible for the day to day operation of the library branches. By law, a Chief Executive Officer must be appointed to oversee the library system. The Branch Librarians are required to report to the CEO, who then reports to the Library Board. The Library Board communicates with the Branch Librarians through the CEO, since only the CEO sits at the table with the Library Board during meetings. Here are the current officers and members of the County of Prince Edward Public Library Board. * Douglas Walmsley (Picton), Chairman * Richard Hampton (Bloomfield) , Vice-Chairman * Barbara Sweet (Picton) Picton Branch Librarian, CEO and Secretary/ Treasurer (non- voting) * Janet Lunn (Hillier/ Wellington) * Judy Blemkie (North Marysburgh) * Rosemary Banks (Ameliasburgh) * Pat Dubyk (Picton) * lan Balsillie (South Marysburgh, Council Representative) Gillian Parker (South Marysburgh) has resigned her position on the Library Board due to philosophical differences. Her letter of resignation is on file at the library if anyone is interested in reading it. It is unknown how and when Mrs. Parker's place on the board will be filled.
