He was a lot smarter than me, and he wasn't afraid to prove it. I know that in today's society one is supposed to avoid making children aware of their stupidity, and I wonder why. Kids are aware they're dumb. They just don't care. Society frowns on duplicity in children, though it's OK for adults ( particularly politicians though by no means limited to them). I found it was a moderately successful survival mechanism for a child, but being a novice was not very good at it. Grandpa read me very well, and I think that he allowed me to get away with lying only to show me how difficult it was to pull off successfully. Gee, once you lie, you have to maintain the structure surrounding the lie forever. It's not like you can lie and then forget it. The subject keeps coming up, and the lie has to be remembered. Or did he keep bringing the subject up? I now realize Grandpa allowed me to get away only with relatively harmless stunts like hiding the cookies Mom made me take to my fifth grade teacher, writing on the schoolhouse pavement in third grade, riding my bike through fresh paint on the neighbours driveway, putting my new found cursing vocabulary to use...Grandpa knew about these things, made sure I knew that he disapproved, and above all he set me straight in ways that left no room for misunderstanding. As I recall now, he wouldn't tell my parents unless discovery was more or less a sure thing, or unless in his judgment I had not been attentive enough to his warnings. I'm going to be a grandfather for the first time this November. His approach to grandfathering may be the one I will follow. Besides, I need someone to get bait. - George Underhill "SINCE 1925 MINAKER'S AUTO PARTS (MILFORD) LTD. Phone (613) 476-4547 _ Fax (613) 476-1565 Milford, Ont.
