So take your Valentine out a night early and get to the Regent for its fund raiser. When talking to a friend, we were discussing winters past. We recalled the great snow banks that hid the children as they walked from the school bus to the house, the fact that unless a car had a high aerial it was not seen from the house as it drove by on the road. And we remembered how the main roads went gradually from two lane, to wide one lane, to a trail as the old V ploughs tried to keep the roads open and the snow piled higher and higher. We drove slower, wore rubber boots and said "Well this is winter. What do you expect?" Now we drive on wide roads with the banks winged back and complain bitterly if the plough doesn't pass our house before 5 in the morning, to sand and push the snow out of the way so that we can drive to town for a coffee at 9 or 10 at the same speed we would drive in July. Emergency vehicles did have some problem on a back road in this community - an ambulance got stuck on the way to pick up one of our neighbours - and this could have been life threatening. I certainly would be upset if this was one of my family waiting for an ambulance and could see it just down the road, stuck in the snow. This was an incident that happened because of weather conditions and has happened in the past when the snow ploughing was done by a local roads department. This is the county - winter - and we get snow. Drive accordingly and don't expect miracles. Well this 1s February so it's time to get serious about your seed orders. The seed displays are out in the local stores as are all sorts of potting accessories designed to replace the egg carton. milk carton and foam cup planters that are so dear to our hearts. Our tomato plants were aiways ready to go out in the garden about three weeks before the earliest possible planting date because Clifford was always impatient to get them growing. This year will probably be no exception. In my mind's eye | can see the sunflower bed in all its glory and the tomatoes and peppers in blossom next to a row or two of Spanish onions. And if there is a blizzard in the midst of my musings it will just make the garden in my mind bloom the better. Have a happy February.
