Dear Fellow Citizens of South Ma (Ward 9) Well this is a bit of a shock! File a nomination form and four weeks later | am acclaimed as Councilor for our Ward. No campaign, no signs to post, no speeches, no door knocking... { am aware of how hard the candidates worked in the last election. I also have an idea of the many and long hours Ian has spent representing our area. | want to assure vou | have not entered into this role lightly and | know | wiil be on a learning curve for some time. But § do promise to listen. Personally, | have heen impressed with the work of the current Council. They have dealt with many difficult issues. [ look forward to being part of the team that assumes the work yet to be done. it would be easy to stay home November 13. And that the overwhelming major ity of the ratepayers present at that meeting let the Council officials and the Councillor know that they didn't any good reason to abandon our present arrangements, especially as it would cost each property something in the nature of $40.00 more in taxes per year? And that a presentation was made in person to the whole County Counc to let them know the views of residents op- posed to changes in garbage disposal, and that Council sacked down and left things alone for a while? Fok Well, guess what! We lost. This morning, Oc- tober 31st, 2000, a neighbour phoned to tell us that the sed was done - that in the new year, 2001, we would enjoy garbage pickup. Not wishing {o jump to conclu- sions, | started a series of phone calls to make sure the news was true. Talked to among others, Brian Read and Brian Robson in Public Works and lan Balsillie, Ward 9 and Frank Smith, Ward 8, Councillors and, sure enough, it's a go. Do any of you out there feel there was any obligation on the part of our member of Council to let us know what was happening? Do you think maybe they think South Marysburghers are a dif- ficult lot and should be left in the dark? Do you think they were g to tell us before or after the rile on November 13th? Maybe we should support a mayoral candidate who takes the wishes of constituents seriously and does not rule mag- isterially from a great condescending height.
