South Bay UCW The ladies met at South Bay Church Hall on Wednesday, May 9th, at 1:30 p.m. President Brenda Minaker opened our Meeting with U.C.W. purpose and the Lord's Prayer. Joyce Minaker's devotional was based on scripture from Acts telling of Lydia who was the first female convert to Christianity. She established the first Christian church of Europe in her home. Roll call was Show & Tell and we heard some interesting narratives. A thank you note was received from Mary Guernsey for the support she received during the time of bereavement. The ladies were also invited to visit her mother, Irene Magee, any morning Our group is invited to enjoy a social time at Picton United Church on Thursday, May 10th at 730 p.m. Karen Guernsey volunteered to represent our U.C. W. to help with the fall rally at Cherry Valley. Plans were finalized for lunch after our Anniversary Service on May 20th. Our Anniversary supper on Wednesday May 30th, and Strawberry Social on Saturday, June 23rd, were discussed. An invitation was received from Friendship United Church to attend a picnic at Northport picnic grounds on Tuesday, July 17th, at 12:00 noon. The ladies moved that we purchase a small freezer and Joyce Minaker volunteered to pursue the matter. Card Secretary Donna Loney sent cards to Audrey Murphy, Kimm Taylor and Pat York. Brenda Minaker's program was about raising a child to the age of 18 years. Did you know it will cost $160,000.27 | Alice's contest about what every baby comes equipped with had the ladies rather stumped. Could it be because it's a long time since any of us had to deal with this situation? Hostesses Dodie Dance and Helen Miller plied us with goodies and were thanked by Alice Miller after which © everyone yn returned 1 end, SINCE 1925 MINAKER'S AUTO PARTS (MILFORD) LID. Not his job, you know. So we took the angora guinea pig to the pet shelter, or humane society, or whatever the adoption agency/pet abattoir was called in those days. In front of me was a man with a large black dog, saying, "I want to return this dog. He wrecked my apartment, the lady who was supposed to look after him during the day, take him fora walk and a pee, is unreliable. I can't keep him." Pet man yaps, "This isn't a car lot. You don't take these animals for a test drive. You got him. He's yours. Keep him." Dog owner barks, voice rising, "I have a collar, a food dish, a water dish, a leash, a rubber bone...I didn't get all these things for a test drive. 1 meant to keep him. It's just not working." Pet man snarls, "He's your dog. He's your problem." Dog owner shrieks, "He'll be your problem because I'll let him loose outside the door. Is this better?" Pet man mumbles, "Well, I won't have to give you your money back." Dog man screams, "Is this what it's all about? A "couple of crummy bucks? I don't want your dumb money." While this feast of vitriol transpires, guinea pig man is standing right behind dog man with an unlikely story of an angora guinea pig found in a vacant lot. I can visualize pet man shouting, "Oh yeah, 1 believe you. Wild guinea pigs threatening Toronto. Breeding populations in | vacant lots, Threats to small children. Get out! Go home! You bought him, he's your problem!" 1 shuffled guiltily up to the wicket with my preposterous story and the man said, "He's a beautiful animal. What a shame someone did this to him. We can { place him easily." And he caringly placed him in a small animal cage. Go figure. - George Underhill
