Computer Tips - Continued from page 9 while waiting for your machine to boot. XP Pro does all the above and more. Again, familiar but different. If you are an advanced user and need power and configurability out of your operating system, XP pro is for you. It has the ability to run multiple processors and oodles of RAM. Again, if your tech IQ isn't very high, know worries, just don't waste your money on PRO. You do pay for the added features and if you don't need them, don't buy them. Both operating systems handle older software well. You can even run specific older programs in an emulation mode, where XP will run the program as if XP was windows 95. This is fantastic for people with lots of software. XP doesn't weigh in on the old hardware side quite as well. Because there is so much hardware out there, many manufacturers are still racing to get XP drivers on the market for their older hardware. Many One Born Every Minute - Continued from page 7 Vernice McConnell has been one of the driving forces behind the establishment and maintenance of our Library. She says she is planning to write a history of the process that went into this library and the financial and other support provided by people in this community. Please give Vernice a call and encourage her to complete this history. She shares a concern with others that people newly arrived in the area have no knowledge of the struggle that has been gone through and just accept the homogenized reality that Picton should dictate to everyone regardless of the diversity in the various Wards. Downloading drivers for your whole machine can be quite arduous on a slow internet connection. Some older software is not useable by XP and you are forced to upgrade. Users of Norton antivirus beware, only the most current version, Norton Antivirus 2002 works on XP. This can add to the cost of the upgrade. Our suggestion for XP currently is this: if you have an old machine, forget the upgrade for now or find out what all your components are and check their manufacturers websites for updated drivers. If you have a recent machine, still check the drivers, but you can try. If you are ordering a new machine, then order XP preinstalled. This will force your machine builder to deal with any potential issues. XP has the potential to be one of Microsoft's best yet. But there is a lot of proving to be done. It has not been in the market place for over a year. Itis a great upgrade, but you don't need to rush into it. With a little investigation, you can decide what is best for you. Do some digging around and see what other people are saying. This can save you a lot of hassle in the end. The web is a perfect resource.
