If you are looking at buying a completely new system then this is usually a good time of year as most companies have Christmas specials. The best thing to do is find out what the person needs. If they are a general computer user than a step in or mid ranged system should do everything that they need. If they are an advanced user then they may be looking for such things as a ¢d burner or a high end video card. These cannot be found in base level systems but maybe offered as upgrades. You can expect to find step in systems as low as $800 to $1100. If you are paying more than this then chances are you are buying a system which has many bells and whistles that the beginner will not use. If you are buying for a person who wants to play the latest games and burn cds and lots of other high end options then you need to look at getting a video card that can handle them. Usually a 64 meg card and above will do. Also a tip on burners, they are very well priced these days and you should be looking for one that has the following specs at very least 40 x 12 x 40. This will give you a good idea who is offering what and how each computer matches up. Also, ask about warranties, training, where the machine needs to go if work needs to be done on it. There is nothing worse than buying someone a gift that has a problem and the only place that will fix the problem is in Taiwan. Your gift will be much better received if someone nearby can work on it. If you are looking at getting someone an upgrade pack- age then the simplest way of doing it is to get a gift certifi- cate for that person. $150 is a great number to start off with. If you can get the specifications of their computer to the place that you want to do the upgrading then all the better. If not, again the gift certificate is the most versatile item to get.
