Life in the Past Excerpts from Nelson Hicks' journal at Hix Holme, South Bay March, 1900 Mar. 1 A frightful morning snowing and drifting wind North East. Pa and I drew water for the cows. Time 12:30 and still snowing and blowing don't think I will be able to get out on the roads to break them out. Time 7:15 o'clock P.M. It has never let up snowing and blowing all day. Mirt is reading Uncle Toms Cabin to night to pass the time away. Mar. 2 [ went and ordered men out to brake out roads. I never seen in all my time the roads so much drifted up took us all till 12 oclock to get them passable. John Loney said it was the worst storm he has known in 30 years back. I have been most of the after noon shoveling roads here and there. Time 8:45 oclock Mirt has been reading Uncle Toms Cabin and now Ma is taking a turn at it. Sun. 4 Ida and Dan went home this four noon. It has been snowing some most all day. Mirt and I intended to go down to Mr. Spaffords But did not go as it was storming and roads were so drifted up. Mon. 5 Mirt and I went down to Mr. Spaffords roads were very bad hardlly drive off from the walk. Tue. 6 I was down to Mr. Spaffords rained and blew all day. After Dinner about three oclock Mr. Spafford went out and broke roads out. Thurs. 8 Ma and Pa went over to Picton took our 16 1/4 Ibs of butter @ .25 = made a quick trip got home about four oclock. Archie went up to Nelse Ostranders to cut wood. Emmet Wood, Mary E here to night Emmet fetched Michale Hicks and Jessie out to Millers. Tues. 13 I went up to Eldon Vandusen got another load of wood quite cold but very fine sleighing. Archie come home to night and Marsh Minaker here to night. Weu. 14 I drew two loads of wood down from Eldon's lovely sleighing and cold. Snow storm of 1939 Ray and Marion Powers with Wrex and Audrey Hicks in their 1939 Durant Thurs. 15 I drew down another load of wood Archie come down Marsh Minaker were here all night. Mirt and 1 went down to Wesley Wattams practising for a neck tie social at carmen. Fri. 16 Pa and Archie took over a load of hay to Picton for Gilbert & Lighthall. Mirt and I went down to Mr. Spaffords fetched Valura up with us. Mable is here and { suppose they will have a big time. Sat. 17 Dear, dear what a morning another such a day as we had the 1 of the month. if anything I think worse. Wind blew harder and from the West. I don't think it will drift the roads up as bad because the wind blew two hard for it to lodge any place. Archie and I drew water from the Bay for the stock. Sun. 18 Not a rig by here to-day. Snowed and drifted all day.I under the weather some to day and Archie in the same pardicament. passed the day mostly sleeping. Moen. 19 Not feeling much better to-day. Mirt complaining too. Archie sick with Lagrippe. Weather change wind gone down and stoped snowing. Pa ordered men out to brake roads. Tue. 20 Feeling better this morning went out to the Continued on page 20
