The South Marysburgh Mirror Observations Sitting on my deck with a cup of coffee in the early morning is a great time for thinking and observing. I live in a very picturesque setting with lots of trees, Black River and colourful neighbours so there is plenty to see and hear. What a soulful sound to hear a loon pass overhead calling to his mate. And the crows are complaining about some- thing in their own inimitable way. Not to be left out, a tiny wren squeaks repeatedly for attention. As the sun rises, it enhances the sparkle of the spi- der web strung across the entryway. What a perfect place to catch something - or somebody. How do they know this will almost guarantee them their dinner? There's a male cardinal hopping under the spruce tree, picking up his breakfast. And there's his more sub- dued mate joining him to partake after a brief exchange on the way. With their bright colouring, how do they escape their predators? And there's the neighbours' family of squirrels scurrying for the cones from the conifers. Oh, Oh! Here comes their cat but the young ones don't seem to be too concerned Maybe they haven't learned the lesson of sur- vival yet. The wind swaying the branches of the trees has a mesmerizing effect on the mind. How does a tree survive hurricane force winds, freezing and thawing and drought? After all, it must stand in one place and endure whatever nature presents to them. What is all the ruckus about? That little banty rooster flew on Wilbur and knocked his hat off while he's milking the jersey cow. It's quite funny to see this feisty little rascal take on anything that moves. You have to ad- mire his grit but he can be rather a nuisance. The buzz of passing cars is the only sound disturb- ing the morning peace. But I know that people must go to work to make a living. My days for doing this are behind me for which I am happy. Not everyone has the privilege to sit, relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. - Alice Miller LOST Storms Road and County Road 17 Black River Area Black Himalayn Cat Answers to "Bear".
