16 /July 2023 The South Marysburgh Mirror Paul Elter’s Tintype for a Story Exchange comes to Milford Library By JC Sulzenko Visual artist and writer Paul Elter brought his artistry and skills to South Marysburgh as part of his project Silver Tongued. In collaboration with the Al Purdy A-Frame Association, and as Artist in Residence, Paul created real Tintype portraits on sites around the County from the end of May until the end of June. | had the pleasure of posing for Paul, ably supported by his partner Heather, as they op- erated out of their van (which doubles as the darkroom) out- side the Milford Library on the morning of June 17. Many passers-by stopped and asked questions while they set up. In making his proposal, Paul knew this project de- parts somewhat from other A-Frame writing residencies by focusing on photography. However, every portrait will be complemented by a story that each subject will pro- vide. It’s ekphrasis in action! Paul led me through the chemistry which allows him to take photographs using technology that had the “widest use during the 1860s and 1870’s, but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century, and it has been revived as a novel- ty and fine art form in the 21st.” (Wikipedia). He and Heather are de- lighted with the enthusiastic response the project has attracted from people all around the County. The ini- tial period for taking the pho- tos and collecting the stories was confined to the residen- cy, but Paul explained he can only take 5 or 6 photos each day. He would like to stay in the area longer, to be able to gather more images and sto- ries even after the end of June.
