The South Marysburgh Mirror August 2023/ 5 What’s New at @ Your Library? LIBRARY| Word Warriors Reading Program to offer it again this fall with a limited registration of 4-5 students, thus enabling one- on-one attention. If you would like to sign up your child, or need more infor- mation, please contact the Milford library directly at 613- 476-4130 or email kel- ley@peclibrary.org For 8 weeks, from May to July of this year, the very first pilot session of Word Warriors ran at the Milford branch li- brary. Word Warriors is a fun, hands on, phonics-based read- ing program for students in grades 2 — 4. It uses games, computer programs and en- gaging activities to teach and reinforce the “phAonics code” so that students can catch up with or just improve their reading skills. Of course, by extension, spelling and writing skills often improve as well as the children begin to make the letter/sound connection and why words are spelled and pronounced the way they are. The parents of our first students, Claire and Emma, were pleased with the help the program offered to their children and said they would recommend it to others. “Claire loved the program and learned a lot! She had a fun time and thought of it more as a game club than reading work.” Added Em- ma’s mom, “the program was very helpful, we saw a lot of improvement at home.” The Friends of Milford Library, who initiated and help run the program, plan my: Emma (left) and Claire, holding their Certificates of Achievement as first graduates of the Word Warriors program. —Photo submitted I'mpleased to assist you with Ontario government legislation, programs & services, MEMBER OF ag@MiN@/Am@ARLIAMENT 61 3-962. 1144 toddsmithmpp.ca Constituency office:
