South Bay United Church By Dorothy Speirs As we noted in an earlier is- sue of The Mirror, in the days of our grandparents, there were many more churches through- out the south end of the County than there are today. Perhaps you’ve noticed in your travels around Point Trav- erse a memorial cairn on Baby- lon Road. The cairn marks the site of the Carman Methodist Episcopal Church and is now maintained by South Bay United Church. A memorial service is held at the cairn site once a year. Here’s the story of the church as it is told in the History of South Bay United Church. The First Hundred Years 1872-1972. “In the vicinity of Point Traverse, well known to the older generation as Babylon, the Carman Church was erect- ed in the year 1877, one of the finest structural types of build- ing of its day in the County of Prince Edward. The building was of brick structure and the chief mason was William Smith of Picton. The carpenter who did such an excellent job on all the wood- work, horseshoe gallery and steeple was Charles Boles.
