WHITBY 905-668-3394 Outbreaks of COVID-19 have now been declared at more than 30 long-term care and retirement homes in Durham Region, according to data published by the regional health department. Data available from the Durham Region Health Department as of Friday, Jan. 7 indicates the outbreaks consist of 104 cases of COVID-19 - 44 among staff, and 60 among residents. The health department's statistics for staff relate only to Durham Region residents. The health department reported 14 confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care homes and 18 in retirement homes for a total of 32 active outbreaks in long-term care homes and retirement homes. "The Health Department continues to work with area long-term care homes and retirement homes to address concerns regarding COVID-19," a statement from the health department on Friday said. "Public health inspectors work closely with these organizations to manage their outbreaks and assist with addressing infection prevention and control issues to ensure proper protocols are in place and followed." Of 394 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Durham since the beginning of the pandemic, 227 have been among residents of longterm care and nursing homes, according to health department data. Information from the provincial ministry of long-term care indicates that more than 83 per cent of eligible long-term care home residents had received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine. As of Dec. 30, the province imposed new rules restricting visits to long-term care and nursing homes.
