Emergency rooms across Ontario are facing record wait times and Durham is no exception. Officials at Lakeridge Health say a bottleneck in the system is causing the issue -- crowding and nursing availability are key problems compounded by the fact local family doctors and walk-in clinics still aren't offering in-person services at full scale. "What (people) are used to from their primary care doc or urgent care clinics simply isn't being offered the way it was being offered pre-pandemic, not yet," said Dr. Tony Stone, chief of staff at Lakeridge Health. Medimap is one example of technology that can help people check wait times at walk-in clinics in real time, potentially diverting them to a clinic with a short wait time instead of an ER. The Canadian technology company was launched in 2018 and now has about 1,200 clinics across the country use its tools to post wait times online, including some in Durham. Teddy Wickland, vice-president of operations for Medimap, said patients have called the technology a "lifesaver." He said Medimap can't solve the structural issues plaguing ERs, but can make it easier for people to navigate the health-care system. "More transparency in physician schedules for patients, more education on where to get the right type of care for patients, and more consumer-friendly tools" are some of the strategies that could help move people away from stressed ERs, he said. Wickland said Medimap is working to on-board more clinics and also create a verified review system so people can get feedback on local clinics.
