- Description
- Woodstock's first grammar/high school was established by an Act of Parliament in 1841. This first school was located at the corner of Dundas and Wellington Streets. In 1851 a new school site was chosen at the corner of Graham and Hunter Streets. By 1881, the number of students at the grammar school had outgrown the building, resulting in a larger school being built on Riddell Street known as the Woodstock Collegiate and Vocational Institute (pictured here). By 1939, the school had once again become overcrowded and a large part of the building including the gymnasium and the shop wing had been condemned as unsafe. The "new" and current W.C.I. was officially opened on January 19, 1940.
