- In February 1890, the body of Frederick Cornwallis Benwell was found in a forest a dozen miles west of Woodstock. He had traveled overseas with Douglas Raymond Pelly to meet John Reginald Birchall, who had proposed the idea of investing in a horse farm. Birchall was a swindler and was lying about the farm. Birchall killed Benwell, and during his trial, Pelly was the cheif witness for the prosecution. Birchall was convicted and executed in November of 1890.
