- Description
- The jail was built in 1854. Prisoners in the jail would grow their own food to cut down on meal prices, they wore clothing made by local merchants to boost the local economy, they had a library of donated books, and they were allowed religious services. In total there were 5 hangings at the jail, and in 1977 the jail was closed and prisoners were moved to the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre. In 1986, the Oxford County Board of Health moved into the building after renovations and now the building houses the Woodstock location of Southwestern Public Health.
