Born and educated in Brantford, Costain began his professional writing careers as a reporter for two local newspapers, The Expositor and The Courier. As author and editor, he provided a popular account of the evolution of British constitutional monarchy and Canadian historical development. One of his novels, Son of a Hundred Kings, was set in this city and The Chord of Steel, a biography of Alexander Graham Bell, clearly established Brantford as "the Birthplace of the Telephone." - Place of Publication
