- Description
- Postcard shows a photograph of H.M. Royal Chapel of the Mohawks, often shortened to "Mohawk Chapel" on a sunny day. The church sits on a grass lawn in front of a line of trees. The exterior of the chapel is paneled with white-painted wooden slats and features a wooden set of double doors and a plaque which is illegible due to its small size within the image. In front of the church sit two stone pillars and a church bell in a wooden frame. The church steeple sits at the centre of the church at its front. The top of the steeple is out of frame of the picture.
No date for the postcard or photograph is provided. - Notes
- Her Majesty's Royal Chapel of the Mohawks was the first Protestant Church in Upper Canada and is currently the oldest surviving church in all of Ontario. It was built in 1785. The chapel is now recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada and is run by Six Nations Tourism.
To learn more about the history of the chapel and of Indigenous peoples in the areas now known as Brantford, Brant County, and Six Nations of the Grand River, visit the official website of H.M.
