Summary of Cultural Attributes:
Historical: The old Wades SS#8 school is located on a ½ acre lot that is part of a 200-acre Crown Patent to Susan Hallenbach for Lot 42, Concession 3 in 1834. Some of the land was later sold to Henry Nix, and then still later to Harrison Bettes - then in 1866 the Bank of Montreal. The following year a ½ acre lot was granted to The Trustees of Common SS#8, Township of Brighton and the school opened its doors in 1867.

It became known as Wade’s School largely because of William Wade who settled on part of this lot in 1837 and served as the Township's Secretary Treasurer from 1867 to 1909. William's brother John lived next door and the area became known as Wade's Corners. The school drew students from an older school to the south in Cankerville and from another old school just to the north. Boys who were old enough to work attended regularly in the winter months. On Arbor Day in 1889, some students brought trees from the woods to plant in the school yard.

The school closed in 1964 and was granted for $30 by the Brighton South Township School Area Board to the Provincial Council for Ontario - Boys Scouts of Canada as the meeting hall for the Brighton Township branch. It became known as the Kilbank Lodge.

Architectural: The red brick structure was a typical one-room, Ontario school house of that era. The front entrance, now a small add-on frame vestibule, is bounded by windows on both sides. It has three side windows. It lacks a typical SS#8 plaque common to most schools.
