Legal Description: Plan 28 Lot 2 and Pt Lot 3 RP39R8012 Part 1 s/s Chapel Street
Property: House
Date of Construction: circa 1862
Heritage Status: Listed
Summary of Cultural Attributes:
Historical: This house is located on a town lot that is part of a 200-acre Crown Patent in 1809 to James Richardson. The lot was acquired in 1855 by Joseph F. Patterson, who is believed to have built the house circa 1862. In 1866, the property was purchased by Samuel E. Marsh and it remained in the Marsh name until 1894. In 1908, it was sold to Samuel G. Down and it remained in that family until 1950, when it was purchased by Ross McMaster. Jean Cunningham owned it from 1978 until 1997, and the present owner, James Shettell, acquired it in 2004.
Architectural: This red brick with white trim, 1 ¾ storey house is a typical Ontario 19th century Gothic Cottage style, albeit the upper windows in the front and side gables are Romanesque. It is rectangular, with an open veranda fully across the front, bearing the inscription c. 1862, and covering a central door with windows on each side. The wood framed windows are six-over-six and may be the originals, as are the soffits and fascia.
