Summary of Cultural Attributes:
Historical: This house, which was formerly known as the Mount Olivet School SS#25, is situated on a one-acre tract that is part of a 200-acre Crown grant in 1802 to Ludowick Miniker for Lot 35, Concession 7. From 1812 to 1844, the property was owned by Charles Stuart. In 1870, Robert Taylor purchased the tract and a few months later sold it to the Trustees of SS#25 Brighton Township. The school was opened four years later. The school closed in 1966 and in 1967 was sold by the Public School Board of Brighton Township for $800 to John and Vasilka Wilcox. In 1985, it was granted to Alice B. Abbott and Douglas J. Abbott and in 1998 to the present owners Alice B. Abbott and Douglas J. Gower.
Architectural: The old one-room school house is built of red brick and now has a black, steel roof. It featured three, slightly arched windows on each side and two on the front bordering the main entrance (new windows are six-over-six with white trim). Now there is an open veranda on the front and east side, as well an addition on the rear and rear west side. The structure features a bell tower (with bell) and the plaque bearing the SS#25 inscription remains visible on the front side.
The structure was destroyed by fire and a new home now occupies the property.
