Summary of Cultural Attributes:
Historical: This house is located on a 1/3-acre lot that was part of a 200-acre Crown Patent to Christopher Robertson in 1797 for all of Lot 23, Concession A of what was then Murray Township. A few years later the property was acquired by John D. Smith, founder of Smithfield, who in 1818 sold the south half to Abajah Smith. The first Ontario Land Record of this particular lot is a 1905 sale from Wilmot J. Clark to Bertram Potts. Wilmot is believed to have built the house in 1900 and later became the minister of the nearby Smithfield United Church, built in 1901 under the leadership of a Rev. Collins.

Three different members of the Potts family held the house over the next 20 years and thereafter it changed hands several times. In 1986 it was acquired by Lajos and Elizabeth Simo.

Architectural: This two-storey, red brick with white trim house displays elements of Gothic Revival style. It has a quite steeply pitched roof and is L-shaped, with a front veranda on the recessed part, immediately below an upper floor gable. The front part of the L is marked by a lower three-window bay and an upper single window. All windows are slightly arched and have one-over-one panes. The windows, soffits and fascia are believed to be replacements.
