"Death claimed one of our highly respected citizens, Mr. Walter Ames, who passed suddenly away, Friday evening from a heart attack at the home of his son Mr. Lloyd Ames. "Obituary - The Late Frederick Walter Ames: Death came suddenly on Friday evening to Frederick Walter Ames, a well known and highly respected resident of Codrington, Brighton Twp. Mr. Ames had been about the farm as usual during the day and was suddenly stricken while sitting at the supper table. Deceased was in his 70th year and was born in Brighton Twp., being a son of the late James Ames and Elizabeth Woof. He is survived by three sons Kenneth of Campbellford, Lloyd of Codrington and Vernon of Hamilton and one daughter, Mrs. Harry Jaques of Codrington. Note: The grantee is Walter Ames, husband of Linnie King and father of Lloyd Ames, my maternal grandfather. After purchasing the main King farm on the west side of the road he was accumulating land around it to make up the 350 acre farm I knew in the 1960's.
Note: This is the land north of the swail which would later become part of the McGee farm.15

The entire east 100 of Lot 2 had been owned by Thomas B. Wragg as early as 1874 due to various transactions which named his children (Thomas & Amelia) as Grantees and Grantors. Charles Bell and Albert Robinson were also involved along the way.
Note: The County Survey of 1875 shows T. B. Wragg as the owner of the east half of Lot 2.15

Lloyd Ames recalls that his father's watering trough was a blessing to the horses that pulled the mess wagons, also to the many tired feet. At this point there was an exchange of horses for the balance of the trip. John Goodfellow remembers, as a little boy, following the marchers as far as the 8th concession, when the teacher led her pupils back to Mount Olivet School.." "In 1915 a contingent of soldiers marched from Brighton to Campbellford where they entrained for Belleville. when they arrived inb Codrington at noon, they stopped in the field south of the Walter Ames home, west of Carman Ruttan's present residence. Here the soldiers removed their socks and boots and washed their feet in the watering trough. Tents were set up and the officeers at chicken, the soldiers ate ?? . Ames' kitchen table was used for the food. Codrington ladies supplied cakes and ?? for their desert. Fresh horses were supplied by Codrington men to drive the mess waggon on to Campbellford. As a small school boy, John Goodfellow remembers following behind with teacher Maggie Jordan and the other students, as they marched on to the train and the students returned to Mount Olivet." Note: These lines are hand written in spaces around pictures and newspaper articles about WWI. There is no signature but I assume they were written by Margaret (Atkinson) Goodfellow, who was much involved in working on "The Tweedsmuir Histories of Codrington", and was the wife of the John Goodfellow mentioned in the story.18
