Residence: circa 1960; Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Per Charles Buchanan: Dave lived for many years with his mother in the house west of Hwy 30 near the Mount Olivet road. After his mother died Dave could be seen routinely heading to Brighton to spend time at the pool hall. He seemed to always have the same clothes on and you could expect to see the pipe in his mouth. Gordon McGee farmed the land around the house and has suggested that Dave did very little in the way of housekeeping.
Residence: 21 February 1962; Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Fire destroyed the home of Mr. David Goodfellow on Highway 30 north of Codrington early the morning of February 21 ... " from The Campbellford Herald, Wednesday, March 7, 1962, see on microfilm at The Ontario Archives
Residence*: 1965; Mount Olivet, Ontario; Per Charles Buchanan: Dave's house on Hwy 30 burned down one morning and he then moved in with John, Margaret and the kids on the east side of Mount Olivet. He cleaned up, got some new clothes, started smoking outside and seemed to enjoy these completely different living conditions for the last years of his life.
Gordon McGee was the first on the scene when the house burned and was reported to have said that he found Dave sitting on a suitcase in front of the burning house - calmly smoking his pipe. Dave apparently yelled to Gordon "Look at her burn!"
Note*: 2 November 1967; Antrimlea Farms, Brighton Twp., Mount Olivet, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "David N. Goodfellow Celebrates 90th Birthday at Codrington - David Nelson Goodfellow of Codrington marked his 90th birthday quietly on Sunday at Antrimlea Farms, Codrington in company with his nephew, John Goodfellow, Mrs. Goodfellow and girls. (Nov 20 1967). Still a man of vigor, he takes pleasure six days a week in walking two miles to ride the bus to Brighton where he spends the afternoon shooting pool. "I'm not a pool shark; I play for fun. Mr. Goodfellow, son of the late John Goodfellow and Louisa Dingwall was born on a neighboring farm. He recalled stories that his father had told of his work in the California gold rush. A silver watch used as time keeper there has been in David's possession for many years and has been passed on to his nephew. The proceeds of the California work were used to purchase a farm which was later left to David's brother now Mr. Grant Goodfellow, Argyle St., Peterborough.
His ancestors came from Antrim County, Ireland in 1841. The farm on which he has lived for the past six years since his own burned, bears a similar Irish name. (Tweedsmuir Histories, Reel 1, I-231)6
