"My dear Elizabeth
We are sitting down to dinner after completing a useful day's work. McKenzie was expelled and declared unworthy to hold a seat in this Parliament, about half an hour ago. A great change has taken place among his supporters. Many of the most respectable declared today that they cast him off forever....behaved on this occasion, more like a beast than ever.
Attorney General redeemed his character by a most eloquent speech. There were seven of us who waited all day to reply to Bidwell, but he cheated us by remaining silent and allowing the questions to be put when it was least expected. The Rats all returned and behaved like Lions. The three days purgatory they endured is a sufficient punishment for them. This I fear there is still a stain that time can hardly obliterate, resting upon the House.
Think, my love, of the Villainy of the man, who deliberately printed the names of 30 members, charged them with being the destroyers of the liberties of the people," - Notes
