MEMORIAL SERVICE
AND VIGIL
FOR
Dr. Walter Rodney
WHO WAS MURDERED
IN THE STRUGGLE
FOR FREEDOM
On Friday June 13, 1980 at 10 pm Dr. Walter Rodney, a leader of the Working Peoples Alliance, was murdered in Georgetown, Guyana, by a bomb blast. Walter Rodney’s brother who was with him at the time of his assassination, escaped death but was seriously injured. He is presently being treated in hiding. Another of Walter Rodney’s brothers has been imprisoned by the Burnham regime. Walter Rodney was murdered by the Burnham PNC dictatorship because he had tangibly contributed to the unity of the Guyanese peoples across race and ideological lines, on a common platform and front, against the repression and injustice of the illegal Burnham PNC dictatorship.
We call on the Guyanese, Caribbean and Canadian peoples to publicly denounce this cowardly and criminal act which has been committed against one of the world’s most decent and humane leaders of oppressed peoples.
We call on the Canadian government to join the Jamaican, Grenadian and Dominican governments which have declared a day of national mourning and have publicly denounced the assassination of Dr. Rodney as a cowardly and criminal act.
JOIN US IN DEMANDING THAT THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT:
* PUBLICLY DENOUNCE THE MURDER
* BREAK DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE BURNHAM REGIME
* WITHDRAW ALL ECONOMIC AID EXCEPT FOR FOOD AND MEDICINE
* RAISE THE ISSUE OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN GUYANA AT THE UNITED NATIONS AND IN
THE COMMONWEALTH COMMUNITY.
