RODNEY AND THE QUESTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN GUYANA On June 13,1980,Dr.Walter Rodney was murdered in Georgetown,Guyana.Dr.Rodney,one of the leaders of the opposition Working Peoples Alliance fell victim to a "Death Squad" that is operated by the"Security Forces" of Guyana. Dr.Rodney's murder has been condemned by groups throughout the world.Within Guyana the act has provoked anger among the people whose human rights and civil liberties are constantly being taken away.The country's largest political party--the Peoples! Progressive Party-- has angrily condemned the murder of Dr. Rodney.The party has had meetings with the WPA and other opposition groups in Guyana to plan common action in protest over br. Walter Rodney the senseless murder of Rodney who was regarded as one of Guyana's most brilliant scholars.His opposition to the illegal,repressive ClA-instal led PNC government in Guyana led to his death.The installation of the PNC regime by the CIA in 1964 marked the beginning of a reign that has resulted in tremendous setbacks for the progress of Guyana. While Jimmy Carter speaks of human rights violations in select countries,hé closes his eyes to the atrocities being commited by the ClA-installed and C!A-supported government of Forbes Burnham in Guyana.The USA stil! supports the government of Burnham which is incidentally the only government in the world that calls itself socialist and enjoys American support at the same time.
