(.1A) - wooden case with drawer (B) in bottom, glass sides and top, sliding front and bacl panels; above the drawer are 2 black knobs; 3 legs on bottom, the 2 along the front edge are adustable
- metal cylindrical rod mounted in the centre of the case with a cross bar sitting in the top; the crossbar has a scale marked on it with "0" in the centre, going up to "5" at each end; a metal pan attached to a wire loop is suspended from a hook at each end of the cross bar; an arm attached to the central rod extends up over the cross bar and holds a horizontal metal rod that is attached to a black knob on the outside of the case; a metal needle points down the central rod to a scale printed in brown on white plastic at the base of the rod, printed below the scale is: "VOLAND & SONS/NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y./PAT. OCT 15, 1912"; a circular level is mounted behind the rod; a metal rod is mounted at the back of the case with 2 arms that extend beneath the suspended metal pins
(.1B) - wooden drawer with black plastic knob; "12697" is engraved on the top of the front panel; stamped inside: "VOLAND $ SONS/ANALYTICAL BALANCE/…" (in part); 2 wood blocks affixed inside bottom of drawer, tops are indented and lined with black velvet, pivotting wooden arms lined with velvet are mounted on top (L-37.2cm, W-23cm, H-6.2cm)
(.1C) - wooden bench with "V" shaped legs; in drawer (.1B) (L-10.1cm, W-3cm, H-5cm)
(.1D) - white paper printed in black; contains instructions for use; folded into quarters, split in 3 pieces along the centre fold (L-18.8cm, W-13.2cm)
(.2A) - round cardstock box; inside is white; ridge around bottom is black (D-3.2cm, H-1.2cm)
(.2B) - lid for (.2A); black paper band around side; top has blue star seal reading: "BALANCES-VOLAND & SONS - WEIGHTS/NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y." in white; handwritten in black in centre: "2-5/Mg./riders" (D-3.2cm, H-7cm)
(.2C) - thin wire with loop twisted at top and two arms (L-2.3cm, W-1.1cm)
(.2D) - thin wire with loop twisted at top (L-2.1cm, W-.4cm)
(.2E) - thin wire (L-1.5cm)
(.3A) - block of wood, painted black; 8 circular holes along one edge, different sizes, some lined with green felt; rectangular hole in centre with rounded edges, 5 circular holes lines with felt inside; slot carved dinto opposite edge (L-15.3cm, W-7cm, H-2cm)
(.3B) - rectanfular glass with rounded ends and a metal knob; fits into corresponding hole in (.3A) (L-9.2cm, W-2cm, H-1.3cm)
(.3C) - curved, brass coloured tweezers; fit into slot in (.3A) (L-9.5cm, W-1.2cm, T-1.5cm)
(.3D) - hexagonal piece of metal, one side curved up, embossed: "500/mg", fits into one of central holes in (.3A) ("-1.1cm, W-1.1cm)
(.3E) - square piece of metal, one corner curved up, engraved: "2/DG", rests in one central hole in (.3A) (L-1.1cm, W-1.1cm)
(.3F&G) - traingular piece of metal, one side curved up, embossed: "100mg", both fit in one of central holes of (.3A) (L-1.3cm, W-1.1cm)
(.3H) - hexagonal piece of metal with one side curved up, embossed: "50", fits into one of central holes in (.3A) (L-.9cm, W-.9cm)
(.3 I&J) square piece of metal, one side curved up, embossed: "20", both fit in one of central holes in (.3A) (L-.8cm, W-.6cm)
(.3K) - metal cylinder with nub on one end, engraved: '50", fits in hole along edge of (.3A) (D-1.9cm, H-2.8)
(.3L) - metal cylinder with nub on one end engraved: "20", fits in hole along edge of (.3A) (D-1.4cm, H-2.1cm)
(.3M) - metal cylinder with nub on one end engraved: "20", fits in hole along edge of (,3A) (D-1.4cm, H-2.1cm)
(.3N) - metal ylinder with nub on one end engraved: '10", fits in hole along edge of (.3A) (D-1.1cm, H-1.7cm)
(.3O) - metal cylinder with bub on one end engraved: "1", fits in hole along edge of (.3A) (D-.5cm, H-.9cm)
.4-.5 - hollow cylinder of wire mesh; in drawer (.1B) (D-1.1cm, H-3.5cm)
.6-.7 - square of cream coloured cotton, in drawer (.1B) (L-4.8cm, W-4.9cm)
.8 - piece of gray fabric, in drawer (.1B) (L-24.9cm, W-18.3cm)
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
