- this is a travelling dentist box in cherry. It and the dental tools in it were used for many years by Dr. R.C. McCutchen of Highgate. Dr. McCutchen was born in Dufferin County and came to Highgate in 1921 after graduating from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. As noted in the Orford Story, McCutchen was responding to an ad that had been placed in the London paper by the Highgate Board of Trade. He had to have a special license to practice because he was under 21 years of age. He served Highgate and Orford Twp as a dentist for 55 years. His many civic positions included manager of Highgate Ball Team in the 1930s, Fire Chief, Reeve, member of the Ridgetown Horticultural Society, and past Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge (Masonic) for Chatham District. He also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Ontario Dental Association. He used this box on his house calls in Orford Township throughout his career. The design, construction, and age of the brass fittings would date this box to the mid to late 19th century hence Dr. McCutchon would not have been the first owner.
