- Thomas James Heather joined the 1st Western Ontario Regiment at the outset of WWI. In April 1915 his father Samuel enlisted with the 33rd Battalion out of London in order to be close to his son. Later in 1915, another son, Samuel Robert enlisted in the British Artillery. In March 1916, Jim was seriously wounded and died the next day. His father, who had helped to carry Jim out of the trenches, was killed almost a month later. By June 1917, Samuel Robert had also been killed, leaving only his mother, Francis and seven siblings in Chatham, two of whom later served in WWII.
