- First started publication in Bowmanville in 1837. Published by the James family for over 100 years.
Now owned by the Metroland newspaper chain: merged in 1998, then merged with Clarington This Week in 2007 and finally a discontinued publication in December 2008.

- Final issue of the The Merchant And General Advertiser, on Sept, 15 1876 contained an editorial special; "our last arrangements have been entered into, by which the MERCHANT will be incorporated with the STATESMAN. Arrangements have also been made for improving the STATESMAN, in both matter and appearance, and the determination is, to make the paper worthy the confidence and support of every Reformer in the Riding. Next week, the STATESMAN may be expected to make its departure."
