Berry celebrated their Sth Wedding Anniversary Saturday after- noon and evening Jan. llth, in the I.O.O.F. Hall, Orono, which was donated by the Lodge in general for the occasion. The Heather Rebekah Lodge catered with a delicious lunch, served from a table beautifj.al- ly decorated with a lovely white linen tablecloth with gold streamers. Centering the table was the wedding cake, expert- ly iced, decorated and made by Mrs. John Berry. Bouquets of. yellow mums were on each side of the table. The bride and groom of !ifty years were presented with a lovely table lamp by their for- mer neighbours around Kirb,I also a 400-day dlock and purse of money from their immediate families. Several other beauti- fui gifts, cards and congratula- tions were received from their many friends. Over 125 signed the guest book. Miss Rosemary Smith. niece of Mr. Berry, received the guests at the door, assisted by ather members of the fam- ily. Those present at the wedding fifty years ago, attending the Anniversary were Mrs. James Nixon, sister of Mrs. Berry from TISLFloé 1I O k I Thornbury, Ont., January 20, 1958 Dear Mr. James: I appreciate you sending me marked copies o! the Statesman dated January 9th and 16th, and arn certainly glad to hear that my friend, Irwin Colwill, is not guilty o! storing American appies to the detriment o! local grawers. The f ive reasons for Amer- ican apples coming in do flot en- tirel.y cov.es the situation. Apples coming over in bulk packages and being packed and mîxed with Ontario apples bas been one o! the worst features. A lot o! these apples were under size, that is below 2%"~ and certainly beiow U.S. Standard for Fancy in calaur. The im- porters used thern and are using them, now as a lever ta lower prices o! superiar quality On- ýario apples. 1 believe if imports o! inferior quality fruit were prahibited and that ahl fruit had ta be graded up ta a standard of U.S. Fancy and having a size o! 21/2"9 in diametes, we could meet any competitian. But is is this poor coloured, smaller sized fruit aoming in and going out ta the trade mixed with Ontario apples, and thereby lawering the quai- ity o! the apples going to the stares that is really doing the damage.
