rm.m*4 A - SVA.ttl ClU*laite MM SPORT NOTESi By Doug Glynna An effgy of a Russian hockey piayer was burned at a main Intersection in the Town of Whitby Sunday afternoon. The dummy was made of bran sacks. It was doused with gasoline and set ablaze. Was this an example of Canadian sportsmanship? We don't think sa. We believe this was the action of persons who don't know the meaning of sportsmanship. People who didn't reaily understand the meaning of Dunnies victory - or somneofle drunk with mixed thought; of the victory. Certainly they had a just right in celebrating. Ail Canadaj has. We are mast certainly proud of this fine achievement by 1 the Canadian Warld Hockey Team. It is a story that will live1 in the memory of sports fans for decades; how thev won and reached the Worid Hockey Summit in that great battie. ?JOT JUSTIFIED But this achievement didn't justify the act of the guilty' parties. Even if Russia had won the game - this action wouldn't have been justified. It just showed iack of reason and the mixed hysteria that sametimes inhibits sports fans. A feeling that has caused riats and one that will continue ta darken our reputation. as spartsmaniike people until it is brought under contrai by those it holds. To be humble invictory is the sign of any great athiete. For great athletes accept the fact that there must be a winner and laser, and sametimes they are bath. Fans, the erratic ones, dan't. Ail their biased thoughts can faresee is a victary. Many try ta share the qualities of great athietes, but they ney'er wvil until they are able ta accept defeat and victary with graciousness. CONGRATULATIONS To the Whitby Duniops on the occasion of their great xictory ini the name of Canada - we say congratulations and thanks. Thanks for a job weii done. This fine sports acamplishment by Dunnies will long live in the annals of Canadian sport. + 1 AROUND THE TOWN...
