-4 ~- -r QAXI avrLL'M47b«r"N y 4-al SPORTopICSI By Frank Mohua MA 3-7234 D.O.C'q This le belng written hortly after the Bowmanv'llle-Orono Combines left the ice Saturday night after posting a well-deserved 8-3 win over Napanee to even up the Eastern Ontarioa bague final at one game apiece. The B.O.C.'s skated hard throughout the centest to turn the powerful Cornet machine inta a badly dis- organized unit. Usually the smooth-running Ontario Champs. are the ones who capitalize on the other teams' mistakes. But Saturday, it was the Combines who assurned comnmand right from Art Rennick, were neyer headed. However, it should be pointed out that the lasers' rapped in two of their goals, during a briet second period lapse, when the B.O.C.'s apparently eased up for the only time in theý entire game. As we have pointed eut before, it will take an ali-out effort ta beat Napanee, and that is Just the kind of effort the Combines produced to turn the trick. If (and there's no reason to believe they can't) the local play up to Saturday's winning form, they should have a 3-1 lead by the tirne this is being read. Last year the B.O.C.'s ralled up a large score ta take the opener, and then as everyone knows, they lost four straight. This year Napanee aided by injuries ta Syd Arnold and Raye West went on ta win the first game 13-5, atter the game had been tied 4-4 in the final minute of the second Z. period. It certainly would be considerate, if the Bowmanville- Orono team were ta repay Napanee for their troubles in the '57- '58 playoff. i. i. . i. t TOWN LEAGUE HOCKEY A couple of overtinie periods to decide first and third place positions - victaries by the second and fourth teams ta draw! even with the other clubs, and force overtime - an upset last * week, a corne from behind win this 'week and finally an overtime goal ta give Brooks Construction the pennant, atter trailing by four points with two games left. -Anything can happen in a Thursday night Town League double-header. Now tonight the., playoffs begin with Brooks Construction meeting the Dept. of Works in the opener, and the Blockbusters versus Front StreetI in the nightcap. Why not slip down ta the Mrena and sec the Town Leaguers in action? As we said befare - anything can happen. f t t i. i MIDGETS Ta-night the Mldgets play In Colllngwood in the first game of a two-game total goals Ontario semi-tinal series. The return game is here Saturday night. Last week we reportcd that the opener was ta have been in Collingwood a week ago to-night. Where the confusion arese we aren't certain, but we do know et several people who were planning ta make the trip. prior ta the article, se we *don't feel toe bad about the error. The main thing is - don't forget Saturday'e gane. here. f t t. t "ijt GOODYEAR HOCKEY A tip of the hat ta Jiggs Cowllng, who was picked as the most valuable player in the Goodyear Hockey League: .ack Bond, the rnost sportsmanlikc player, and Don Masters who capturcd the scoring title. The Ahl-Star game in Tarante is all ready ta go on Sunday at Lakeshore Arena, New Toronto, et 1 p.m. The new line-up for Bowrnanville will include Vince Vanstone, George Heath, Dan Girardi, Fred Cowling, Terry Masters, Don Masters, Clint Ferguson, Mort Richards, Bob Faircy, Bruce Cale, Hank Lane, Lloyd Harnilton, Buck Cowle, Raye West, Bill Lyle, Archie Crossey and John Mason. z;ze:u : ----------u--------------- ppp: Napanee Wins Opener With 7 Goals in Third. A pain et goals by McKeown.' ten seconds apant in the final minute of the second period, broke up a close 4-4 game, and the Napanee Cornets went on ta outscore the Bowmanville- Oreno Combines seven goals ta anc in the third ta take the opening game of the best of seven league final last Wednes- day in Napanee. The tide i-bang- ed atten playing-coach Syd Ar- nold suftered a knee injur-<, gctting in the wa * of a bullet shot by Maracle. Bath Arnold and Rave West, who was hurt in the tirst period, returned ta the line-up for the final session, when apant fromn a playotf game, they normalîx- would have seen no more action. The Combines skated off the ice at the end of the tiret per- ioch with a 2-1 edge, when they- had a definite margin in the play, Arnold opened the scoring on a pass tromn Don Mencer, and Keith West completed an Arnold-Copeland pass pla * y U give the lead back to thc B.O.C.s aften Manacle had tiec the score. Gilmour, McKeown and Combines Even Series With Win on Saturday IPaeed by the. Raye West, Art IRennick, George Westfall U.ne, thie Bowmianville-Orono Com- [bines completely outplayed the Napanee Cornets here Saturday night, winning 8-3 ta even up their best et seven series for the Eastern Ont. League title at one game apiece. Raye West account- ed for halt of the Combine's to- tal, w-hile line-mates Rennick and Westfahl collected single markers. Gary Copeland and Keith West picked up the re- maining talles. Except for a brief second per- iad lapse. the locals turned in an inspired team effort ta dlaim a well-deserved victery before a large crowd. Bowmanville- Orono jumped into a 2-0 lead alter a minute and 48 seconds et tii-st' periad action tram which i they were neyer headed. Raye West opened the scoring at the 26 second mark, rifling a drive into the short side on a well-placed pass tram Reninick, Westfall grabbed a loase puck in his own end, and carnied up the middle, bankîng a drive off Londry te start the play. Keith West scored the second at 1:48, when the puek d<ibbled into the cerner tram close-in. Once mare a rebound off a detenceman set up the score, as Junior West fielded Copeland's rebound and slid a pass to Keith. Tomn McAll- îster's corner shot frorn an al- rnast impossible angle seemedi ta detlect In off Rose Hawes skate ta put the Cornets ight back in the game, three minutes1 later.1 Rennick made it 3-1, in the1 first minute ot the second per-1 iod, on a beautiful sala rush,.1 when he split the defence, and as ail three players hit the deck, the speedy centre star swiped the disc past Parrish. The Rennfick line put on a tre- mendous amount of pressure, culmin.ating in 3 goals in '0 se- conds to send the Combines in front by 5 goals. Copeland start- ed the splurge at 7:46, when his waist high blue line blast hit the rigging. Raye West purnped in Rennick's rebound, as West- fail raced into, the corner te get the puck over ta Art. Wesfall gat -a well-deserved tally on pas- ses frorn Raye West and Cope- land, with Napanee unable to get out of their own end. Play lialted completely as the resuit of an unfortunate acci- dent when Jini Hallowell of Starkville tumbled fram the top of the stands and was taken by ambulance te fthe Memorial Hos- pital, where he was admitted with undetermined injuries. Napanee, quick te take advan- tage. notched a pair of fast go-als by George Jacklin and Les Dou- glas, when the Combines ]et up for t.he only time in the game. IHowever, the B.O.C.'s bounced back to hold a big edge, in the third period, as Raye West tip- ped Mercer's pass from the boards past Parrish at the 52 second mark. and "Gusty" fnot- ched his fourth nt 18:58. Mickey Walker and Rennick picked up assists. Tempers flared in the first and second periods, as Copeland, Robinson and Westfall upheld the pugilistic honour of the home team. but a.lthough stili rough, the players went unpenalized mn the third. Be.O.ce Star of the Week ART RENNICK, GEORGE WESTFALL, RAYE WEST The B.O.C. Star of the Week was the lime of Art Rennick, George Westfall and Raye West. For the second consecutive week, the Bowmanville Surplus Store Award goes ta more than a single player, and we think that anyone who was at Saturday's game will agree that these three players were outstanding. The line -was in complete charge whenever they were on the ice, accounting for six of the B.O.C.'s eight goals, with "Gusty" responsible for four, and Art and George picking up singles. Rennick had three assists, Westfall two and West one. Individually, Art Rennick turned in a tremendous two-way effort, and bis goal was as beautiful an effort as you'll see anywhere.
